Building Information

Building Permits are required to:
Build a house or commercial structure
Put on an addition or perform alterations to an existing structure
Finish a basement or attic
Add or replace a deck, porch or sunroom
Erect a garage, shed, barn or similar structure
Put in an in-ground or above ground swimming pool holding more than 18 inches of water
Put up a fence (over 4 ½ feet high or surrounding a pool)
Erect a retaining wall (over 4 feet high)
Replace a roof or re-shingle over an existing roof
Demolish a structure
Dig a well
Connect to public water
Install a propane tank
Install a fire suppression system or fire alarm system

Building permits are not required to:
Install siding
Install windows or doors (including garage doors) if the dimensions of the original opening are not altered
Erect a fence less than 4 ½ feet high or a retaining wall less than 4 feet high
Install a deck less than 30” above grade
Install kitchen cabinets and appliances in an existing space
Perform routine maintenance and repair activities

Edgmont Township adopted the Uniform Construction Code on April 21, 2004. The UCC is the official Building Code of Edgmont Township, along with the International Building Code, the International Residential Code, the International Plumbing Code and the International Fire Code. These codes are available for viewing at the Township Building. Some exemptions to the UCC were adopted as well. They are delineated in
Ordinance 184.

All contractors working in Edgmont Township must register with the Township before starting work. Registration includes completing a form, paying a fee and submitting proof of liability and worker’s comp insurance.

All permit applications are required to be signed by the property owner.

All permits are required to be posted at the construction site.

Application for Building Permit – use this form for new buildings, additions, alterations, relocations, demolitions, sheds and garages over 300 square feet, sheds and garages under 300 square feet with utility connections, decks, retaining walls, fire alarm and fire suppression systems, and electrical, mechanical and plumbing work.

Application for Use and Occupancy/ Request for Final Inspection this form must be submitted for all new construction (residential and commercial) and for all habitable additions (including garages and decks).

Zoning Permit Application – use this form for sheds and garages under 300 square feet without utility connections, fences and patios.

Application to register – all contractors working in the Township must complete this form. Homeowners doing their own work do not have to register.
